Interview Technique

Before the interview: You must have done your homework, otherwise you are wasting everyone’s time – mainly your own. Don’t be afraid to walk in with a pen and paper.

Appearance: It is human nature that on meeting a new person you form an opinion of them within 30 seconds. Therefore appearance and punctuality are extremely important. Remember you are an intern candidate and you should dress conservatively. Wear white or light blue shirts, simple tie, black shoes and black socks. And aim to arrive half an hour before the interview.

Be dynamic: No one wants to employ someone that can’t be bothered, even if they have excellent academic credentials. Be enthusiastic in the interview and have a willingness to learn. A get up and go attitude is needed.

Adaptability: It is unlikely that the interview will go as planned, be prepared to adapt with an open mind.

Be yourself: Integrity is extremely important in this industry. If your personality doesn’t fit then maybe you are applying to the wrong bank or are applying to the wrong division. What ever you do don’t lie, it is a small world and the chances are you will be found out.

Don’t be arrogant: the end of the day you don’t have any right to be arrogant; you are applying for an internship - the bottom of the ladder. By the same token don’t annoy the interviewer, it doesn’t go down well. Don’t be sluggish and behave appropriately
