Interview After

Success: Congratulations.

Help I’ve been rejected! Applying for intern positions is extremely competitive and a large number of good candidates get rejected. The take home message is don’t worry and react. Keep applying!

It is worth being aware of how some companies, which will remain nameless, select candidates to interview…

Example 1: Company X listed applicants in alphabetical order and consequently started analyzing candidates alphabetically. They realised that when they got to letter P, they had a suitable number of good candidates and stopped their application process.

Fil says: WHAT!!!! Unbelievable but true.

Example 2: Company Y only interviewed candidates who had a degree in a pure science or maths degree. Not economics, not engineering and no arts subjects.

Fil says: WHAT!!! If you are an artist/economist/engineer don’t be put off this is an odd example.

Basically don’t worry if you get rejected, the whole process can be pretty random at this stage.

How do I react? Try the following:

  1. Use your University careers service to find other intern application positions.
  2. Get in touch with small banks to see if you can do some voluntary work experience.
  3. Apply for other business internships, try accountancy?
  4. Do something different. Start a pro-active business, a unique travel experience or both.
