World of Finance: Networking
Networking, why should I bother? It is to easy to think networking is an evil practice most commonly performed by sucking up to a potential boss. Maybe it is all too embarrassing. Or maybe you feel there is no real point in networking; after all applications are online and networking might not directly enhance your chance of getting a job.
On the contrary! Networking will significantly enhance your career and will lead to new options. Indeed the most successful people in the world are often the most skilled at networking. It doesn’t have to be smarmy! Networking can be as simple as talking to extended friends about their career experiences in banking. Don’t make an ulterior motive when it is not needed!
As a student you already have access to a large range of networks from sporting teams to University societies or you might want to start your own. Take advantage of online networking sites such as facebook, myspace, linkedin and others. Don’t use facebook or other social sites to show to your mates that you are a massive party animal. Employers invariably can access these sites and they do not want to see pictures of you being sick!
